Who starts a gourmet marshmallow business while already running another business and wrangling two kids under age 4?
This wild one:
Hiya… I’m Cherie Donnellan, founder and CEO of this gourmet marshmallow biz, Hella Mallow.
My son and I are major marshmallow fans. And, when he was a toddler, it became a fun bonding experience to roast mallows on our kitchen stove top whenever we felt like a sweet treat (often!).
I love roasting them and pulling the shells apart from the gooey melted centre. It’s sooooo satisfying.
One day I randomly said to my husband, ‘I wonder if you can actually make marshmallows…’
And because I’m an avid baker and dessert maker, I looked up a few recipes and gave a vanilla bean marshmallow recipe a crack.
The first batch was incredible and eating my gourmet marshmallows was so much better than any store-bought marshmallow I’ve tried.
My handmade marshmallows are fluffy, squishy, soft. They're sugary, pillowy delights with a creamy flavour.
So I let my creative brain loose and experimented with different colours, flavours and garnishes.
I shared my experiments on social media and my DMs kept blowing up.
‘Wow - they look incredible!’... ‘Where did you get those?’... ‘OMG, did you make those?’
I knew I was onto something.
So by early 2023, I decided to turn my fun hobby into a business.
